The decision to jail Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, two Reuter’s reporters that were investigating the massacre of Rohingya is unacceptable. The military regime wanted to send a severe warning to whoever want to dare to look into military abuses. A real “censorship through fear” for anyone who fight to uncover uncomfortable truths and expose wrongdoing by those in power; for whoever try to report inconvenient truths. Investigative journalism is the link between the truth and us, and this is precisely why it is vital for democracy. This is why we will always stand to fight for the freedom of thought for journalists, activist and lawyers who express their critical views! We must adopt targeted individual sanctions against the leaders of the military regime, as long as Myanmar legislation will not be aligned with basic international human rights law and standards. We urge the Myanmar authorities to set immediately free the two journalist and to repeal the Official Secrets Act and all the other laws that allow authorities to arrest or harass whoever fight to inform the people about the atrocity they are perpetrating. ]]>
